On April 13, 2026, La Poste issued a collector’s stamp celebrating the vital role of French subsea cable ships, with the "Sophie Germain" taking center stage. This emblematic vessel of Orange Marine symbolizes the ongoing innovation and expertise in maritime infrastructure that underpins global communication. While the internet appears to float effortlessly in the cloud, the reality is that most international data traffic is transmitted via a vast network of subsea cables, connecting continents, economies, and societies beneath the oceans. This stamp pays tribute to the silent, yet crucial, infrastructure and the dedicated teams that maintain it, ensuring resilience and continuous operations.
The story begins in 1851 with the first submarine cable linking Calais and Dover, followed by the first transatlantic connection in 1858. France established its first cable service in Toulon in 1863, with ships like Dix-Décembre (later renamed Ampère) pioneering this vital infrastructure. Today, over 570 submarine cables, totaling more than 1.3 million kilometers, carry over 99% of the world's internet traffic, enhancing network resilience and security, but also enabling digital inclusion.
Launched in 2023, Sophie Germain represents the latest generation of cable vessels to maintain and repair subsea cables. Equipped with advanced remotely operated vehicles, cranes and systems designed for deep-sea intervention, it can operate at depths of up to 6,000 meters. Orange Marine is also building two sister ships in replacement of existing ships, scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, to further strengthen the fleet’s capacity for maintenance and repair - ensuring the resilience of our global networks.
The true backbone delivering the internet is rooted deep beneath the oceans. Subsea cables are critical infrastructure and maintaining them requires technical expertise and a strong sense of responsibility. Orange Marine’s mission is to guarantee the continuity and resilience of these networks, safeguarding the flow of data and energy that keeps our societies connected. This stamp honors the vessels and the dedicated teams working tirelessly to keep the world online.
To unveil this stamp, designed by Raphaële Goineau, official painter of the Marine Nationale, we offer you an interactive experience: reassembling its design as a puzzle. Once the puzzle is completed, a text will automatically appear to introduce you to the background of this stamp.

This stamp highlights the strategic role of our activities in global connectivity , showcasing French expertise developed over more than a century.
Since the 19th century, French cable ships have played a key role in laying the first transatlantic cables, laying the foundations for modern connectivity. Today, in the digital age, this stamp reminds us of an often overlooked reality: 99% of global communications pass through submarine cables.
